REVIEW: Then Came You by Jill Shalvis (ADULT)

June 20, 2014 by Jaime Leave a Comment

THEN CAME YOU
By: Jill Shalvis

Publication Date: July 1, 2014

Veterinary intern Emily can’t believe she wound up in the small town of Sunshine, Idaho, instead of the Los Angeles clinic she had always imagined. Now she has to put her plans to move to L.A. on hold for a whole year while she fulfills the obligation of her vet school scholarship.

Then Wyatt, her gorgeous one-night stand from a Reno vet conference, introduces himself as her new boss. And Emily is just as drawn to his seductive looks and quiet strength as she was on that very steamy night. She soon learns that Wyatt isn’t just a laid-back doctor, but a delicious alpha male tempting her away from her carefully laid-out plans…

Jaime’s Thoughts
Then Came You by Jill Shalvis
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

No surprises here you guys – if you’re a fan of Jill Shalvis then you’re going to want to read this book.

Shalvis consistently writes romance that isn’t too angsty or heavy and has the perfect amount of sweet and sexy… and Then Came You fits perfectly. While I’m a diehard fan of her Lucky Harbor series, her Animal Magnetism series is a close second on my list. In book 4, we meet Emily. She’s on her way to Idaho for her veterinary internship and Sunshine, Idaho is most definitely nothing like the LA office she was hoping to get placed at. Upon her arrival she’s immediately shoved out the door to help a sheep who is giving birth and runs into none other than her one time Reno fling… Wyatt.

So what happens when you find out you accidentally slept with your new boss… and it was amazing?

Neither is looking for anything permanent, Emily… because she’s already counting down the days until she can head home to take care of her father and Wyatt because he’s not going to get burned by a relationship again. (People can’t leave you if you never let them in to begin with right?)

Both decide to keep things professional, but they can’t deny their chemistry. I actually really loved Emily. I totally loved her awkwardness, but I think my favorite parts were when she just couldn’t deny her physical reactions to Wyatt. I definitely found myself chuckling at times. And Wyatt… *fans self*

He was built all big and rugged and tough. Great eyes, great smile, both of which advertised that he was up for anything, especially trouble.”

Sign me up. Seriously, I think I need to find myself a veterinarian… I mean how Shalvis makes some of the things that these guys do seem sexy… I don’t know, but it’s a talent. But above all of that, these two were just sweet together and I loved all the different aspects of their relationship that we were shown…

“Was I loud?”

Wyatt leaned over her and kissed her worried mouth. “I don’t know.”

“How could you not know, you were right here.”

He grinned. “Well, the first time, your legs were around my ears so I couldn’t hear.”

There’s a few small minor plots to add to the romance aspect of this story… Emily is living with her sister, who is of course dealing with some drama of her own, which adds a layer to the story. But there is also something a little more serious and is a bit of a mystery that happens as you get into the book. If you’re like me, you’ll have that mystery figured out pretty early on, but if you’re like me again, it won’t detract from the enjoyment of the story in any way.

I’ve said it before… and I’ll say it again. Shalvis is a master at what she does and it’s rare that I don’t find myself caught up in the relationships she crafts. Then Came You is the perfect summer read – light on drama and heavy on the romance. Make sure you find this one when it’s released in July!

Thank you to Penguin/Berkley Romance for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest thoughts!
