three-stars
Every story needs a hero.
Every story needs a villain.
Every story needs a secret.

Wink is the odd, mysterious neighbor girl, wild red hair and freckles. Poppy is the blond bully and the beautiful, manipulative high school queen bee. Midnight is the sweet, uncertain boy caught between them. Wink. Poppy. Midnight. Two girls. One boy. Three voices that burst onto the page in short, sharp, bewitching chapters, and spiral swiftly and inexorably toward something terrible or tricky or tremendous.

What really happened?
Someone knows.
Someone is lying.

So I’m not sure what I can tell you about this story without spoiling anything so this is going to be short and sweet.

This is my first April Tucholke book… though I do own her other books, I just haven’t picked them up yet. To say I’m intrigued by her writing would be an understatement. Her writing style is unique and interesting and just so engrossing that I couldn’t put this down, even if at times I was a bit confused as to what was going on.

Every story needs a hero.
Every story needs a villain.
Every story needs a secret.

What really happened?
Someone knows.
Someone is lying.

That’s the tagline for this story, but is it true? And what if you can’t tell who is supposed to be who? It definitely complicates things, and to be honest, the characters kind of shuffle from hero to villain to liar at different times throughout this story so it’s absolutely hard to pin anyone down for sure.

The characters here are complicated and intriguing, and while that is a definite plus, it kind of threw me for a loop and I struggled to understand some of the story and the characters motivations.

If you like stories that aren’t exactly what they appear to be from the summary, then you’re definitely going to want to pick up Wink Poppy Midnight. I will definitely be looking for more from Tucholke in the future.

Thank you to the publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest thoughts.
