We Heart Amy Tintera – Interview & Giveaway

May 2, 2014 by Jaime Leave a Comment

It’s no secret that we adore Amy Tintera over here at Fiction Fare, and I had the opportunity to ask her a few questions about her duology, Reboot & Rebel! I try not to be a total nerd when I talk to authors but not even lying this is usually what is happening behind the scenes:

Rebel arrives in just a few weeks, and I can’t stress enough how much you guys are going to love this book – It was the perfect end to this series… and even though I’m sad to see it come to that end, it couldn’t have been done any better!  Before we talk to Amy, First – THE BOOKS

Five years ago, Wren Connolly was shot three times in the chest. After 178 minutes she came back as a Reboot: stronger, faster, able to heal, and less emotional. The longer Reboots are dead, the less human they are when they return. Wren 178 is the deadliest Reboot in the Republic of Texas. Now seventeen years old, she serves as a soldier for HARC (Human Advancement and Repopulation Corporation).

Wren’s favorite part of the job is training new Reboots, but her latest newbie is the worst she’s ever seen. As a 22, Callum Reyes is practically human. His reflexes are too slow, he’s always asking questions, and his ever-present smile is freaking her out. Yet there’s something about him she can’t ignore. When Callum refuses to follow an order, Wren is given one last chance to get him in line—or she’ll have to eliminate him. Wren has never disobeyed before and knows if she does, she’ll be eliminated, too. But she has also never felt as alive as she does around Callum.

The perfect soldier is done taking orders.

After coming back from death as Reboots and being trained by HARC as soldiers, Wren and Callum have finally escaped north, where they hope to find a life of freedom. But when they arrive at the Reboot Reservation, it isn’t what they expected. Under the rule of a bloodthirsty leader, Micah, the Reboots are about to wage an all-out war on the humans. Although Wren’s instincts are telling her to set off into the wilderness on their own and leave the battle far behind, Callum is unwilling to let his human family be murdered. When Micah commits the ultimate betrayal, the choice is made for them. But Micah has also made a fatal mistake . . . he’s underestimated Wren and Callum.

The explosive finale to the Reboot duology is full of riveting action and steamy love scenes as Wren and Callum become rebels against their own kind.

ABOUT AMY

Hi! I’m Amy Tintera, and I write novels for young adults. I grew up in Austin, Texas and graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in journalism. After receiving a masters in film at Emerson College I moved to Los Angeles, where I promptly discovered I didn’t enjoy working in the film industry, and went back to my first love, writing.

My debut, REBOOT, is out now from HarperCollins/HarperTeen, with the sequel to follow in 2014. Film rights have been optioned by Fox 2000. I am represented by Emmanuelle Morgen at Stonesong.

Where did the idea for Reboot/Rebel come from?
I got the idea for Wren first. I heard her voice in my head, saying she’d been dead for 178 minutes. I’d also been thinking about zombie stories, and wishing The Walking Dead would delve more into what was going inside a zombie’s brain. So I combined those two things and made Reboot.
What is the weirdest thing you googled while researching for this series?
“How to fire a rocket launcher,” for Rebel. I’m probably on some FBI watch lists for that one.
What was your favorite scene to write and why?
For Reboot, my favorite scene is the one in Callum’s bedroom, because it’s romantic and a turning point for both characters. For Rebel, it was a scene in the old Austin HARC facility. When you read it, you’ll probably know which one I mean. J
Did any of your characters surprise you by doing something you didn’t expect?
Addie turned out to be surprising. Her role in Reboot is pretty small, so I had to create a lot of her character from scratch in Rebel. She became very strong-willed and opinionated and a large part of her storyline was a surprise. She makes Rebel a much better book, in my opinion.
Did you always know how the story would end or did things change as you wrote?
I knew the feeling of the ending, if that makes sense. I knew the feeling I wanted to convey, but I wasn’t sure of any of the particulars (except I knew a few characters who had to live, and a few who had to die).
What are you currently reading? What books boys (besides your own because Callum was pretty swoony) make you swoon?
I recently read Nantucket Blue by Leila Howland, which was fantastic. I also just read Otherbound by Corinne Duyvis, which is one of the most original books I’ve ever read.
And I swooned pretty hard for Bishop in Hexedby Michelle Krys. A tattooed bad boy is always fun. J
Do you have a dream cast, because we would love to see this on the big screen!
I don’t, to be honest! But I recently heard that Fox is still working hard to bring Reboot  to the big screen, so I have my fingers crossed!
Any advice for aspiring writers?
Keep writing! Never give up! Don’t listen when people tell you it’s too hard or you can’t make a living as a writer.
What’s next for you? Are you working on anything right now that you can tell us about?
I’m working on a YA fantasy right now. It’s still early, but I’m hoping I’ll be able to share this one with readers one day! It’s high-action romance, like Reboot, but set in a fantasy world. With a prince!
