REVIEW: Shield of Winter by Nalini Singh

June 27, 2014 by Jaime Leave a Comment

SHIELD OF WINTER (Psy-Changling #13)
By: Nalini Singh
Publication Date: June 3, 2014
Assassin. Soldier. Arrow. That is who Vasic is, who he will always be. His soul drenched in blood, his conscience heavy with the weight of all he’s done, he exists in the shadows, far from the hope his people can almost touch—if only they do not first drown in the murderous insanity of a lethal contagion. To stop the wave of death, Vasic must complete the simplest and most difficult mission of his life.

For if the Psy race is to survive, the empaths must wake…

Having rebuilt her life after medical “treatment” that violated her mind and sought to stifle her abilities, Ivy should have run from the black-clad Arrow with eyes of winter frost. But Ivy Jane has never done what she should. Now, she’ll fight for her people, and for this Arrow who stands as her living shield, yet believes he is beyond redemption. But as the world turns to screaming crimson, even Ivy’s fierce will may not be enough to save Vasic from the cold darkness…

ABOUT NALINI
I’ve been writing as long as I can remember and all of my stories always held a thread of romance (even when I was writing about a prince who could shoot lasers out of his eyes). I love creating unique characters, love giving them happy endings and I even love the voices in my head. There’s no other job I would rather be doing. In September 2002, when I got the call that Silhouette Desire wanted to buy my first book, Desert Warrior, it was a dream come true. I hope to continue living the dream until I keel over of old age on my keyboard.

I was born in Fiji and raised in New Zealand. I also spent three years living and working in Japan, during which time I took the chance to travel around Asia. I’m back in New Zealand now, but I’m always plotting new trips. If you’d like to see some of my travel snapshots, have a look at the Travel Diary page (updated every month).

So far, I’ve worked as a lawyer, a librarian, a candy factory general hand, a bank temp and an English teacher and not necessarily in that order. Some might call that inconsistency but I call it grist for the writer’s mill.

Cosmo’s Thoughts
5 of 5 stars

So, I was super late to the party on this series.  If you know me at all, you know that when I first started reading Nalini Singh’s Psy/Changeling series last year, I basically glommed all the books available like it was a series on Netflix.  And the reason that I couldn’t stop reading was because Nalini Singh created a world and characters so layered and complex that nothing else out there in the world of PNR competes with it.

But still, even though I’ve read and loved all the books, it’s impossible for an author to deliver every single time, right?  Especially after writing the same series for years and publishing so many books.

No.

It’s not.

I’m beginning to think that the real impossibility is for Nalini Singh to deliver a bad book.  Hell, I’m actually beginning to think that mediocrity is something she’s absolutely unfamiliar with.  Because once again, I loved this book.  Loved everything about it.

Seriously.

Everything.

Vasic was amazing.  I loved him.  Singh gives us heroes that often walk the line between stoic and emotionless to passionate and tender.  And the way she builds his story by weaving in the pieces of his past with his present is both effortless and endearing.  She makes you fall in love with him, even if you’re sure you won’t.

Ivy was equally endearing.  I loved her relationship with Vasic, loved the deliberate build of their romance, and how everything they went through together seemed fresh and sincere.  And this is also a testament to Nalini Singh because her words paint a complete picture that the reader can get lost in.  It’s the reason I read books.  I want to lose myself in a story that holds my attention from beginning to end.

Shield of Winter delivered exactly that.

Another stellar offering from the reigning queen of paranormal romance.

An absolute MUST READ for those of you who’ve read this series.  And if you haven’t read this series, what are you waiting for?  Go.  Buy the books.  Read the words.  I promise you won’t be disappointed.

5 big stars for this one, y’all!
