Review: Hallowed (Unearthly #2)

February 7, 2013 by Jaime Leave a Comment

Hallowed (Unearthly, #2)Hallowed by Cynthia Hand
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I had read some mixed reviews from people so I held off on reading this book. I wanted to be able to sit down and read the last two books in succession and I’m really glad I did.

Clara is dealing with the aftermath of her decisions that she made during the fire. Choosing not to do what her vision told, instead saving Tucker, she’s convinced that she screwed up Christian’s purpose.

Now, she struggles with her love for Tucker and what she feels is her destined future with Christian. New visions have started… someone she loves is going to die and now she has to figure out who and do what she can to make sure it doesn’t happen.

What I really enjoyed about this book, was the range of emotions that the characters and therefore us readers were subjected to. Love, jealousy, anger, sadness and confusion. Clara goes through each and every one and I did too. I found myself connecting with Clara quite a bit and while the pacing is a bit slower than Unearthly, I think that is to the benefit of the story. It really allows the reader to get the full impact of what is happening.

I love the characters… we learn more about Christian and his mom. We learn more about angels, and we definitely learn a lot more about Clara’s mom. The one thing I struggled with was Jeffrey and his secrets. I’m impatient like that but I can’t wait to get into Boundless and find out more about what is going on with him.

There is, of course, a love triangle. I am pretty sure at the end of Unearthly I was Team Tucker… now, I don’t know. I’m pretty solidly Team Christian LOL. In this book, Clara is with Tucker, she’s committed to him yet, Christian is always there in the background. Silently supporting her and helping her through her struggles… Tucker just wasn’t. I get that he has this normal life to deal with, but he didn’t really scream BOYFRIEND to me in this book. I have to say that I missed that. The funniest thing though comes in some of the dialogue that Hand gives us.

Before I moved here, I never got the whole love-triangle thing. You know, in movies or romance novels or whatnot, where there’s one chick that all the guys are drooling over, even though you can’t see anything particularly special about her. But oh, no, they both must have her. And she’s like, oh dear, however will I choose? William is so sensitive, he understands me, he swept me off my feet, oh misery, blubber, blubber, but how can I go on living without Rafe and his devil-may-care ways and his dark and only-a-little-abusive love? Upchuck.

Yup… I laughed out loud at that passage!

The ending totally gutted me though for sure… first there was the …

And finally there was that last thing…

People, this series is complete so you can read straight through the whole thing – I highly recommend running out and getting these books. Let me just say that I’m so glad I don’t have to wait for book 3!
