Frigid by J. Lynn
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Frigid is a stand alone, new adult Contemporary Romance from J. Lynn… you may know her better as Jennifer Armentrout. It’s no secret that I love her writing and so I made sure this was a priority to get at BEA this year.
I was in love with my best Friend.
And it could be worse, I guessed. I could have been in love with a male stripper or a drug addict. Kyler Quinn was neither of those things. Although he could easily be passed off as a male stripper with those jaw-dropping good looks and messy brown hair, and he was as addictive as any drug out there.
This is a friends to more story, which is one of my favorite types of story and throw in the new adult tag and I’m in. In this one, we have Sydney and Kyler who have been best friends since they were in grade school. Over time, Sydney found herself feeling more for Kyler than she felt she should, and Kyler… let’s just say he gets around. But don’t think badly of him yet… He too has been harboring some feelings for Sydney disguising them as the ‘overprotective’ friend, he just feels like he’s not good enough for her. Of course the big catch here is that neither of them is willing to put their friendship on the line for a possible relationship so they hide their true feelings and the eventual hurt that comes along with that.
When Kyler and Sydney head up to the ski cabin just before Christmas, they end up stranded due to a storm, and their friends can’t get there. The two of them alone for days… stranded with nothing but each other? The big question is whether they will be able to fight the attraction they have for each other. But suddenly that’s not the only thing they have to survive. Someone is stalking them and scaring the crap out of them in the process, can they figure out who it is before someone gets hurt?
So, Jennifer Armentrout excels at writing sexy, swoony boys. Yes, even as a so called ‘man-whore’ Kyler is both of those things. He pulls off the cocky boy attitude for sure. I won’t lie… I was a little worried at the beginning of this story for him, I wasn’t sure I could like him, but I truly did.
Sydney wasn’t my favorite. I liked her for sure, but her focus on how she looked (the I’m not pretty enough for him attitude) really started to bug the crap out of me. I get it. I understand that that was an underlying reason for the situation they were in for her, but it still irritated me.
The story itself, while predictable, was enjoyable. The one thing that just didn’t really sit well with me was the circumstances in which they finally come together. Now hear me out people… They are being stalked… someone is shooting at them, cutting the power to the cabin … overall making them feel uncomfortable and unsafe. I don’t think doing the deed would be at the top of my list of things to do at that point. BUT I was able to look past that and enjoy the story for what it was.
Like I said above, I love Jen’s writing and this isn’t any kind of exception. She is amazing at providing a good, well-written story. I love that she stretches out into the NA/and adult fiction world for us and I’ll pretty much read anything she publishes. But I have to say that one of the biggest things I liked about this book is that we have no traumatic pasts… no abusive relationships, no deep psychological trauma to overcome. I also loved that we got dual pov’s on this one. It really helped getting into each of their minds (especially Kyler) to understand what was really going on.
If you’re looking for a quick, hot and exciting read in the new adult genre then definitely give Frigid a try when it arrives!
