Rookie On Love is a unique collection of short stories, essays, poems, and comics focused on one sole topic… love. If you’ve checked out RookieMag.com you know that it’s an online magazine made by and for teenagers.
Admittedly I’m well out of the teenage range, but I still found myself nodding along while reading certain essays or poems. I found the conversation between Rainbow Rowell and John Green very interesting but somewhat forced… maybe … I don’t know, it just didn’t feel like a natural conversation. What I will say is that I found several of the poems included to be lovely and I enjoyed Marlo Thomas’s take on the topic.  I think this is definitely a wonderful read for teens… it offers up some unique perspectives, thoughts and wisdom regarding the idea of love, and sex, and friendship from people who address it in an honest and heartfelt way. Something I think that teenagers appreciate. The many different voices included in this anthology provide many different perspectives which means that while you may not connect with all of them, there are bound to be a few that you will.
Younger fans of Rookie will definitely enjoy this, older readers quite possibly will find some new writers to connect with and honestly, who doesn’t want to read about love and all the ways it can be interpreted! Give this one a try soon as it’s on shelves now!
Thank you to the publisher for an early copy in exchange for my honest thoughts.
