Sixteen-year-old con artist Jo Chastain is about to take on the biggest heist of her life: impersonating a missing girl. Life on the streets of Boston these past few years hasn’t been easy, and Jo is hoping to cash in on a little safety, a little security. She finds her opportunity in the Lovecrafts, a wealthy family with ties to the unsolved disappearance of Vivienne Weir, who vanished when she was nine.

When Jo takes on Vivi's identity and stages the girl’s miraculous return, the Lovecrafts welcome her back with open arms. They give her everything she could want: love, money, and proximity to their intoxicating and unpredictable daughter, Temple. But nothing is as it seems in the Lovecraft household—and some secrets refuse to stay buried. As hidden crimes come to the surface, and lines of deception begin to blur, Jo must choose to either hold onto an illusion of safety, or escape the danger around her before it’s too late.

Excerpt

Though there are hints of the alarming, truthfully, life is magical these days. On your last day of school, we left Boston for the rest of June and most of July—the girls and Gerry, and Mr. Lovecraft flying back and forth for the weekends—and rented a house on Martha’s Vineyard. The Vineyard instead of the usual Nantucket, not because the Lovecrafts were being respectful of Vivi’s feelings, but because it would look, as I overheard Mrs. Lovecraft say, “wrong-headed.” For the first time in my life, I rode on a boat, which is weird for someone from Florida. The Last One failed on his promises to let me ride on the Everglades boat, same as he failed on his promises to Momma. I don’t think of Momma often these days, which is odd since all I have is time. In fact, we are downright lazy, you and I, and the season is passing fast. Though the ocean is still warm, here and there I find a leaf tinged yellow or orange. We do childish things: ride bikes around the island. Reach for the brass ring on the flying carousel at Oak Bluff. Once, we set our alarms and rose early enough to see the Edgartown lighthouse turn pink at sunrise.

It might have to do with the fact that I am surrounded by the ocean, but you seem less concerned that I am going to leave you and that makes your meannesses fewer and farther between. Mr. and Mrs. Lovecraft are on some kind of circuit here on the island, with parties in Chappy or Squibby every night, and we are left mostly alone. The Lovecrafts had to reciprocate all those cocktails, and one night the rented house was filled with people and the driveway got blocked, and you and I escaped to the roof and watched the parking attendants below scrambling like ants. I have never seen stars so bright.

I sound more like Vivi these days. How Vivi would sound. I take the Lovecrafts’ words in my mouth and try them. See which ones I like. Reciprocate.

So much remains of the old you that affection rushes me when I least expect it. The lope of your walk on the sand. The simple swish of your ponytail. The arc of your lower back when you rise and fall on the balls of your feet. The kooky idea that tickles me in its strangeness. These are enough to make me forgive the alarming things you do, the signs that you are getting dangerous.

I should have known it would all come crashing down.

Sound pretty great, right??

About Kim Savage

I was born and raised in Massachusetts, on the South Shore, which sounds beachy, even luxe. Think Winnebagos and chicken coops. My three brothers, 16, 10, and 8 years older, were teens by the time I became a person. Happiest around adults, who often forgot I was there, I spent days eavesdropping on gossipy moms in lawn chairs and nights listening under the table during tipsy Scrabble parties.

My dad read to me nightly. Eventually and early, I read to myself, everywhere. On top of an enormous freezer chest stuffed with meat. On drives until I grew nauseous. In bed until my eyes gave out. I read anything I could get my hands on. V.C. Andrews and Dickens. Black Beauty and the Bible. The Economist. Madeline L’Engle and Margaret Atwood. National Geographic.

I got a bachelor’s degree in English from Stonehill College and a Master’s in Journalism from Northeastern University. For a while, I worked as a business journalist. Instead of waiting for the Federal Reserve to release the Beige Book, I pitched story ideas along the lines of “Stigmatized Properties: When Murder Kills Property Values”. You see where things were headed.

Today, I live with my family northwest of Boston in a town a lot like Shiverton, near the real Fells reservation of AFTER THE WOODS. Born with dysgeographica—I’m directionally challenged—the fear of getting lost in that lovely, dark forest lives close to my skin.
