Unraveling by Elizabeth Norris
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
You guys… this book!!!
Just before Janelle Tenner is to start her Junior year of high school, she’s hit by a truck and killed. I know right? But after the flashbacks of her life and the blinding white light, she opens her eyes to none other than loner Ben Michaels hovering over her. Deep down, she knows that she was dead and he somehow saved her life.
From that point on, she’s determined to find out what Ben did and how, needless to say, the world isn’t exactly what she thought it was.
It doesn’t help that her father, who works for the FBI, is investigating some strange cases where the victims have been exposed to some type of radiation and a cryptic countdown of sorts that no one can seem to figure out.
I have to say that I completely loved Janelle. She was kick ass and strong and determined… everything I love in a heroine.
I loved loved the relationships that Norris creates between all these characters. The stress and drama surrounding her family, the building relationships she has with the boys, even her interactions with Taylor Barclay…I wanted more of it all!
I’ve said this for other books, and I’ll say it here too – I loved that Norris was able to weave a love story into this without making it the main plot of the story. She never lost sight of what the actual story was about and while we got to see Janelle and Ben’s relationship grow, it was secondary to the countdown and the real mystery.
But oh yes… there were some lovely, sweet moments:
Our noses brush against each other. I hold my breath. Before he kisses me, I can feel how close we are, like the nerve endings in my body are so sensitive they’ve extended inches outward, and the electricity between us charges the space between. Ben hesitates, and I wonder if he’s changed his mind. I open my eyes to check.
And then his lips touch mine.
They’re soft and smooth, and they taste salty from his tears. And then he opens his mouth, our tongues touch, I taste mint, and his other hand slides around my waist, settling on my back. My mouth opens wider, and I don’t know if I’ll ever get enough of him.
And his hand at my back pushes me into him. Hard.
There’s no space between our bodies anymore, and all thought turns to frenzy.
Ben… my Stacee is going to yell at me, but I don’t even care… he’s lovely and wonderful and swoony… and I want to put him in my pocket and carry him around. Only I know she won’t let me have him! LOL
This is a fact paced, action packed story that has a bit of Sci-fi, mystery, and romance. It has a wonderful and unique storyline that immediately intrigued me and I think fans of Veronica Mars and X-files will definitely enjoy this series. The end of this story will also have you biting your nails waiting for the next and final book. I applaud Norris for leaving us there too, it’s not often I read an ending like this and actually am still happy and satisfied!
Definitely get started on this series now, the final book, Unbreakable arrives at the end of April – which gives you plenty of time to read this and the Novella told from Ben’s POV!!
