Jubilee Chase and Flynn Cormac should never have met.
Lee is captain of the forces sent to Avon to crush the terraformed planet’s rebellious colonists, but she has her own reasons for hating the insurgents.
Rebellion is in Flynn’s blood. Terraforming corporations make their fortune by recruiting colonists to make the inhospitable planets livable, with the promise of a better life for their children. But they never fulfilled their promise on Avon, and decades later, Flynn is leading the rebellion.
Desperate for any advantage in a bloody and unrelentingly war, Flynn does the only thing that makes sense when he and Lee cross paths: he returns to base with her as prisoner. But as his fellow rebels prepare to execute this tough-talking girl with nerves of steel, Flynn makes another choice that will change him forever. He and Lee escape the rebel base together, caught between two sides of a senseless war.

Jaime’s Thoughts
This Shattered World by Amie Kaufman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

When I read the summary for This Shattered World and realized it wasn’t going to be featuring Tarver and Lilac I was worried… and disappointed. I’m positive I’m not the only one who felt this way! I have to tell you all though, you may end up loving this one even more than These Broken Stars.
In This Shattered World, we get to meet a new pair that I promise you’re going to love! Jubilee Chase & Flynn Cormac are two people who never should have met. Lee as Captain of the forces sent to Avon is there to make sure the Rebellion doesn’t cause any trouble and Flynn, as one of the leaders of the Rebellion wonders why Avon isn’t terraforming like it should be.
I honestly don’t even know what I can tell you about this installment without it spoiling any of the story for you, so I’m going to keep this review short and simple!
These are companion books, but in all honesty you don’t necessarily need to read book 1 to read book 2… but why would you not… it was one of my favorite reads last year and a definite must read! Where book 1 focuses on Tarver and Lilac’s survival in this strange world, book 2 deals more with the rebellion and the causes around it.
I think what I loved most about this one is that right off the bat you know that Flynn and Lee dislike each other because of these preconceived ideas they have and it was wonderful to see them chip away at each other and start working together to uncover what exactly is happening on Avon, even if that means turning against the people they’ve spent all this time working with to protect and support.
And the romance… it takes a bit you guys, but when it happens it’s sooooo good! I thought these two were never going to work things out, but it was so worth the wait.
If I had to complain about anything, it would say the first 25% of this book sort of dragged a bit for me. I think because I went into it thinking of it more as a second book instead of its own story, I was expecting to jump right into things, but it doesn’t work that way. Instead Kaufman and Spooner take the time to set the stage, which was definitely necessary. They did an amazing job of tying the two books together and showing the overall arc of the series and hinting at where it’s going.
Overall, an exciting and action-filled second part to the Starbound series and to say I’m excited for book 3 would be a huge understatement.
Thank you so much to Disney for the advance copy in exchange for my honest thoughts!!
