Emma Chase, New York Times bestselling author of the Tangled series, returns with a brand new funny, romantic, sexy story!A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight. When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand. Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be. Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I’m going to Mommy and Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal’s office. Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids. And that—that, I know how to do.
Sustained is my first book by Emma Chase and I wasn’t disappointed.
This book is part of a series, but they are more companion books than a series and you most definitely do not need to read the first one to enjoy the second.
Jake Becker is definitely a ‘hit that’ and move on kind of guy. An up and coming defense attorney in Washington DC doesn’t exactly allow for girlfriends and family and complications… and he likes it that way.
He doesn’t do relationships and he certainly doesn’t do the dating thing… until he gets a bit of a scare.
A run in with a devious pick pocket brings Chelsea McQuaid into his life unexpectedly and she screams messy and complicated. With her 6 nieces and nephews, that she’s now guardian to, running her life the last thing he wants to do is get involved even if she is really hot. But it seems he just can’t seem to stay away.
First of all, kudos to Chase for telling this completely from Jake’s point of view. I loved it. He’s such a dick sometimes, but it totally fit his characters and I thought it was fantastic.
I really loved that Jake, despite his back and forth about the relationship, never waivered on his involvement with these 6 kids who loved having him in their lives. It was so fun to see him slowly bond with each of them along the way.
If I had one complaint, I think it would probably be that it seemed to happen too easily… for as much as he loved his uncomplicated lifestyle, he never put up any kind of fight in regards to what was happening between him and Chelsea and the kids. He easily put his work aside for them, and when we first meet him he’s adamant that there is nothing that could derail it, so I guess I just expected more of a fight from him on that.
Other than that, I thought this was certainly a fun and sexy read. Chase definitely can do hot and steamy with very little word choice issues on my end. I will certainly be checking out some of her other titles and I will definitely be picking up the next in this series of books!
