Top Ten Tuesday – Top Ten Favorite Beginnings/Endings In Books

July 30, 2013 by Jaime Leave a Comment

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the awesome and wonderful people over at The Broke and The Bookish

This week we look at the top ten favorite beginnings/endings in books.  Now, we won’t give away any endings but want to share some of each.   These are the books that had us locked in by the time we finished the last chapter, the first chapter…or in some cases, the first sentence.

Favorite Endings

I’m not sure what I can say about this one that you probably haven’t heard yet but trust me when I say, this book is THE BEST!!!.  Tracey Garvis Graves pulls you in with these characters and makes you love them and hope things end the way you want. I’m not giving anything away here but this one definitely falls into our favorite endings list.

I started out not really loving this series but book two and book three really brought it back for me.  Because of these books, this series has ended up in my favorites pile and at some point I will definitely be doing a re-read.

Graffiti Moon is one of those books that stuck with me.  It takes place over the course of one night and is filled with great characters, wonderful dialogue, and a lovely ending.

A number of my favorite series have wrapped up over the last year and the one that stuck with me as a favorite ending is the Across the Universe trilogy.  I thought Revis did a wonderful job of wrapping up the story but also giving me a conclusion I could be happy with.
If you are somehow unaware of the love we have for The Sea of Tranquility, let me enlighten you.  This book is, and always will be, on our favorites list.  You may (*cough cough*) see this in our favorite beginnings below…check it out!  If that doesn’t convince you, please know that we love everything in between too!!

Favorite Beginnings

5 years ago, I died. 178 minutes later, I woke up.
Wren is a reboot who was dead for 178 minutes…longer than anyone before which makes her a better soldier than anyone else..  This is her story and the intro and tag lines alone were enough to get me intrigued…and we weren’t disappointed.

The perfect soldier is done taking orders.

My touch is lethal.   My touch is power.

I’ve been locked up for 264 days.
6,336 hours since I’ve touched another human being.
That’s all we really have to say…other than we love this series by Tahereh Mafi and if you haven’t read any of these books, you are missing out.

Yep – we had this in the favorite endings…now, check out the prologue and tell us you don’t want to read this one…I dare you!
I hate my left hand, I hate to look at it.  I hate it when it stutters and trembles and reminds me that my identity is gone.  But I look at it anyway, because it also reminds me that I’m going to find the boy who took everything from me.  I’m going to kill the boy who killed me, and when I kill him, I’m going to do it with my left hand.

The Beginning of Everything fits because Ezra Faulkner is trying to navigate his new life now that an accident has taken away the thing that defined him for so long.  The book opens  with:  Sometimes I think that everyone has a tragedy waiting for them, that the people buying milk in their pajamas or picking their noses at stoplights could be only moments away from disaster.  That everyone’s life, no matter how unremarkable, has a moment when it will become extraordinary – a single encounter after which everything that really matters will happen.

Two of you exist, only one will survive.  Imagine a world where everyone is born with an alt (genetic alternative twin) and at anytime between the ages 10-20, they can be activated and it becomes a fight to the death…for one of them.   Elsie Chapman grabbed us with the first chapter and didn’t let go until we turned the last page.  Even then, she had us wondering when we will be able to read the next book….2014 is soooo far away!

So, what are the books that make your favorite beginnings/endings lists and why?  What do you think about the ones we chose?
