Review: Altered (Altered #1)

December 28, 2012 by Jaime 3 Comments

Altered (Altered, #1)Altered by Jennifer Rush
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

4.5 stars but I’m rounding up!

I wasn’t going to read this yet, but I had the opportunity to do a read-along with my lovely friends and couldn’t pass it up. I’m so effing glad I did, because it was exactly what I was looking for.

Anna lives with her father in a very small town, where they keep to themselves. Her father works for the ‘Branch’ and is in charge of a project that is located right underneath their farmhouse. Four genetically altered boys, Sam, Cas, Trev & Nick, are locked in … all completely different in personality but all having amnesia.

I didn’t belong in the boys’ world. Not that I belonged in the real world, either. I was too afraid that if I let someone in, they’d figure out my secrets about the lab and the boys. I didn’t want to be the reason the Branch moved the program. Mostly, I didn’t want to risk losing Sam. Because though our relationship was based solely on testing and the lab and my sketches and midnight chess games, I couldn’t picture my life without him.

Sam is the object of Anna’s affection though. While she’s cultivated relationships with Cas and Trev, she is in love with Sam. Nick … well, he’s another story.

When something happens and the boys and Anna have to run, Anna finds out that not everything is as she was told. When the truth starts to come out and clues are pieced together she finds her life will never ever be the same as it once was.

In all honesty 90% of this book is fast-paced action and I loved it.

I was completely enthralled with each of these characters story and how the pieces all finally weaved together to culminate in this epic reveal…

I mean… you kinda know something is up, but when the pieces fall into place I swear I was looking around asking the cats “how’d she do that without me having any idea?”

Anna was awesome. I love a strong female protagonist and she fit the bill completely. Her growth from the beginning of the novel to the end was wonderfully written and when she finally comes into her own I was fistpumping. Believe me, this girl had every reason to crumple to the floor in tears, but she didn’t and I admire that.

Sam… I wanted more … I wanted to know more about him, and I think that’s where my 1/2 star went. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a broody, angry boy (man? I’m not sure his actual age) and he has every right to be, but I feel like I don’t know him well enough. I know how Anna feels about him but like I said, I needed a bit more.

I adored the relationships that Anna had with each of the guys. That was probably one of my favorite things about this story… I mean, aside from the genetically altered, sexy boys.

My eyes traced the etched lines of his bare stomach, the arch of his hips. He wore the gray cotton pajama pants all the boys had, but that was it.

AND even though at one point I did update that I wanted to junk punch Nick, he grew on me and I ended up liking each one of these boys for different reasons. YES I SAID ALL OF THEM. 🙂

Rush pulled me into this story with action and excitement and I was so engrossed I read this book in 4 hours… I couldn’t put it down and I even stayed up late waiting for my read-along partners to finish so that we could flail together about everything that happened.

If you’re looking for something fast paced and action packed with an intense and wild ride, this might just be the perfect book for you. Each twist and turn will have you turning pages to find out what is going on and I promise you won’t be disappointed when you get to that last page. I know I’m looking forward to the second book in this series… *flails because it isn’t even listed in goodreads yet*
