December 31: Top Ten Books I Read In 2013

December 31, 2013 by Jaime Leave a Comment

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the awesome and wonderful people over at The Broke and The Bookish

Let’s just call this the hardest topic ever why don’t we.  It’s so hard for me to narrow 240 plus books down to the top 10 – I can definitely pick out the worst, but that’s not what this is about LOL.  I swear… I promise … I will TRY to keep this list manageable … but remember, I do this for you!!

Jaime’s Picks

Top Five Fantasy – I absolutely loved each and every one of these books, some were new series books and some were continuations of a series I fell in love with previously. But no matter what, I was riveted to the story that each of these authors told and I have spent the time since I read each telling people to pick these books up!

Top Five Contemporary – Ok this one went long because I read a ton of contemporary this year, and I couldn’t only pick five.  These books all touched me in some amazing way, whether it was sympathizing with a character over how something will change their life in ways unimaginable, or connecting with a character over fanfiction or being completely stunned by the twists and turns of a story these were the books that I pushed on people most this year!

Top Five Dystopian – Someone asked me at BEA this year what my favorite genre is and I immediately said dystopian, and it’s true. These are the books that I find myself gravitating to time and time again and this year, I read some amazing ones.  A couple of these are series enders and let me tell you that they are so incredibly done.  I’m just so excited for them to be out in the world.

Erin’s Picks
You’ll probably notice that Jaime and I have some similar books which isn’t surprising but there are some minor differences.  I think it just means you should trust us on how good these books are…we probably wouldn’t agree otherwise.  Of course, this is one of the hardest topics ever – someone asked me for my top five books the other day and I couldn’t even narrow my list down for that.  With that in mind, please don’t hold it against me for picking more than ten.  I will try not to do it again but since Jaime did it….

Top Five Fantasy
Fantasy has become one of my favorite genres and I have to say, I had a hard time narrowing this list down to five..surprise, surprise.  If you haven’t read any of these yet, make sure you do – fantasy isn’t always about trolls and hobbits.

The Bitter Kingdom (Fire and Thorns, #3)

Top Five Dystopian
Dystopian is always one of my favorite genres and you will notice that a number of the books below are the final books to some of the series I completed this year.  The others were books that either pulled me in from the start or continue to keep me interested in the characters.

World After (Penryn & the End of Days, #2)

Top Five From Various Genres
I also wanted to include some of my favorites from those that I don’t necessarily have a huge list for.  These are ones I think warrant being on this post because they were just that good and I can’t wait for everyone to read them and see why!

We Were LiarsThe Bone Season (The Bone Season, #1)
The Boleyn Deceit (The Boleyn Trilogy, #2)Cress (Lunar Chronicles, #3)
A Darkness Strange and Lovely (Something Strange and Deadly, #2)Star Cursed (The Cahill Witch Chronicles, #2)
Covet

So what books are on your favorites list for 2013?  Tell us in the comments and we hope to see you back here in 2014 to talk about books, bookish things and everything we love about reading!

Happy New Year!!
