A LITTLE TOO FAR

“More than a ridiculously sexy, HOT read, Desrochers takes you on a wild ride of self-discovery and bittersweet romance.”
— JENNIFER L. ARMENTROUT, #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR
Have you ever gone just a little too far?
Lexie Banks has.
Yep. She just had mind-blowing sex with her stepbrother. In her defense, she was on the rebound, and it’s more of a my-dad-happened-to-marry-a-woman-with-a-super-hot-son situation. But still, he’s been her best friend and confidant for the better part of the last few years … and is so off limits. It’s a good thing she’s leaving in two days for a year abroad in Rome.
But even thousands of miles away, Lexie can’t seem to escape trouble. Raised Catholic, she goes to confession in hopes of alleviating some of her guilt … and maybe not burning in hell. Instead, she stumbles out of the confessional and right into Alessandro Moretti, a young and very easy-on-the-eyes deacon … only eight months away from becoming a priest. Lexie and Alessandro grow closer, and when Alessandro’s signals start changing despite his vow of celibacy, she doesn’t know what to think. She’s torn between falling in love with the man she shouldn’t want and the man she can’t have. And she isn’t sure how she can live with herself either way.

An Interview With Lisa

Give us your elevator pitch for A Little Too Far…

When 20 yo Lexie Banks falls for the wrong guy, she thinks escaping to Rome for a year abroad is going to be the answer to her problems, but forbidden love manages to find her there too.

Introduce us to Lexie Banks, your main character, and are your characters and their traits inspired at all by real life people?

Lexie is a pretty typical 20 year-old girl…well, except for the stepbrother and almost-priest thing. Unlike a lot of the main characters in other NAs that are out there, she isn’t totally traumatized by some horrible thing in her past…not to say it’s been all roses either, but she’s dealing. She’s an art history major, and a year studying in Rome is any art history major’s dream, so she’s pretty stoked about the trip. She introduces us to some of the pinnacles of Renaissance art—while trying to sort out what she feels for her stepbrother…and maybe falling for an almost priest.

I like to think all of my characters are true to the human experience, but none are based on anyone in particular.

Lexie seems to be torn between two different guys… ‘the man she shouldn’t want and the man she can’t have.”  Did you have a preference when you were writing the story and did you know the end of the story when you started?

I didn’t have a preference. I love both Alessandro and Trent the same, and so far, among readers, the opinion seems to be split. I didn’t know what was going to happen when I started writing. There was a possibility Lexie would choose one, both, or neither. I won’t tell you how it turned out 😉

I haven’t had the opportunity to read A Little Too Far yet, but from the summary I can tell it deals with some risqué situations and topics … Where did your inspiration come from to write this story?

Like all my stories, it started with a character—in this case, Lexie. I had the guys in the back of my head, and just sort of let the story evolve.

Was it hard to jump from YA Paranormal to New Adult? Was there a big difference in your process at all?

I’ve actually written very little paranormal. The PERSONAL DEMONS trilogy and one other YA that we decided to trunk are the only ones. Everything else I’ve written (ten others) has been contemporary or speculative. And, if you’ve read my PERSONAL DEMONS books, you know I push the limits of what’s acceptable to young adult readers. I’ve always felt like my natural calling was to write young characters, because that’s the voice in my head, but staying within “young adult” parameters was a challenge. So, New Adult is the perfect fit for me as a writer.

Honestly, there’s really very little difference in the process. For me, all writing is just getting into character. Whether that character is a millennia old demon (Hi Luc!) as in my YA books, or a woman in her twenties, as in my New Adult novels, it’s all a matter of connecting with them and understanding what makes them unique. The things that make a demon (or vampire or angel) tick are going to be different, so you need to understand what they are and how they’ll effect that character’s decisions, actions, and reactions. But honestly, once you’re literally inside your character’s heads, the writing process doesn’t change.

What books are you reading at the moment?

I’m reading EASY by Tammara Webber.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

What you’re writing has to feel authentic. That will only happen if you’re writing the story you were meant to write. It has to come from the heart. (or in my case, the crazy characters living in my head) The dialogue, the inner and external conflict, they all have to flow from the characters.
About Lisa Desrochers
Lisa Desrochers lives in northern California with her husband, two very busy daughters, and Shini the tarantula. If you’d told her five years ago she’d write a book, she’d have laughed in your face. As it turns out, she’d owe you an apology. Writing has become an addiction for Lisa and A Little Too Far, courtesy of HarperCollins, is her first novel for adults. She is also the author of the young adult Personal Demons trilogy from Macmillan.
When she’s not writing, she’s reading, and she adores stories that take her to new places, and then take her by surprise. Connect with her online at www.lisadwrites.com, on her blog at lisadesrochers.blogspot.com, on Twitter at @LisaDez, and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/LisaDesrochersAuthor
